As new cannabis legislation takes effect, organizations are in the process of constructing or retrofitting facilities to comply with Massachusetts’ medicinal marijuana laws. This includes ensuring your facility is up to legal standards for growing, handling and dispensing medicinal marijuana. Failure to do so could put your license at risk. Your choice of flooring for the facility could have a major impact. While not (yet) heavily regulated, Massachusetts does have requirements for marijuana cultivation and dispensary flooring.
What Requirements Are In Place For Medicinal Marijuana Flooring In Massachusetts?
The original bill has broad outlines for maintaining cleanliness within medicinal marijuana facilities but does not go into too much detail. In our reading, the most relevant passage is in 725.105, Section C, item (f). It says: “Floors, walls, and ceilings shall be constructed in such a manner that they may be adequately kept clean and in good repair.”
Likewise, storage areas for medicinal marijuana “shall be maintained in a clean and orderly condition … free from infestation by insects, rodents, birds, and pests of any kind.”
It’s important to note that under 725.405 Section F, “Failure to maintain the [facility] in a clean, orderly, and sanitary fashion” is considered grounds for revoking that dispensary’s license.
In other words, you need flooring which is easy to keep clean and sanitary – which is exactly what resinous floor coatings can achieve.
Why Resinous Coatings Make Sense For Mass Medicinal Marijuana Flooring
Resinous floor coatings – such as epoxy or polyurethane – are coatings applied to a prepared concrete slab which can significantly enhance its utility. These coatings would be an excellent choice for medicinal marijuana processing and dispensing, meeting the state requirements.

The Benefits of Resinous Coatings When Used for Marijuana Facilities Flooring:
- Create seamless surfaces which are easy to clean
- Discourage bacteria and other microorganisms
- Provide non-slip surfaces that help keep workers safe
- Are low-maintenance
- Can be installed with very little downtime
Resinous flooring can also be an attractive choice and customized in a variety of different styles. If you’re looking to impress visitors -while also maintaining a sterile environment- options such as metallic epoxy can make a powerfully aesthetic statement.
